The importance of power distribution in the maritime industry and EDIBON’s solution

The electrical systems of ships are essential to ensuring their safe and efficient operation at sea. In many ways, a ship can be considered a mobile power plant, as most of its systems, including propulsion, heating, cooling, and essential loads, rely on electricity. This high energy demand requires a reliable, secure, and optimized power generation and distribution system.

Modern ships are equipped with complex electrical systems, including meshed distribution networks, multiple power generation sources, and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems. To ensure uninterrupted operation, these systems enable generator synchronization and efficient energy management under various navigation conditions.

Recognizing the importance of training in this sector, EDIBON has developed the Modular Marine Electrical Power Distribution Application (AEL-MEPD-01), designed to provide comprehensive training on power generation and distribution in ships.

Key features of the AEL-MEPD-01 application

The AEL-MEPD-01 application has been developed to offer both theoretical and practical training in ship electrification. This application covers essential aspects such as:

  • Configuration of the electrical distribution system.
  • Onboard power generation.
  • Propulsion systems.
  • Synchronization between generators and with the port grid.
  • Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems.
  • Energy consumption analysis.

The AEL-MEPD-01 Power Distribution Application includes two generators, each equipped with its own control, measurement, and protection module. These generators can operate in different modes, adjusting voltage, frequency, and output power according to the system’s needs.

The distribution system is designed with a ring configuration, featuring two busbars and multiple interconnection branches. To prevent accidental connection of sources with different phase angles, the switches include locking functions and automatic synchronization. Additionally, four coupling switches ensure proper synchronization of power sources before connection.

A critical aspect addressed by this application is recovery in the event of a “blackout.” If the generators fail, the integrated UPS system allows users to study energy recovery procedures, ensuring the continuity of essential ship loads.

One of the key differentiators of this application is its SCADA system, which enables real-time monitoring and control of the ship’s entire electrical system.
