Vocational Skills Competition

The WorldSkills Africa Swakopmund 2022 competitions took place from March 28 to April 2, 2022, in Namibia. Around 90 young talents from 9 African countries strived for medals in 16 disciplines.

All were winners

The young competitors gained unforgettable experiences during the competition week. Not only they were winners. Also, the WorldSkills organization, global stakeholders, and partners as well as the visitors of the event were thrilled by the passion and commitment of the young competitors.

In the team skill Mechatronics, Marina Iyamba and Natangwe Shikongo from the event host country Namibia won the gold medal. Silver went to the team Boseman Simon Mpete and Mathaila Gift Morokolo from South Africa. Awards in the skill Water Technology were given to Fhatani Libago from South Africa and Muhamubi Reyeen Sizuka from Namibia

Hand-on technology

Festo, as a Platinum Partner of WorldSkills, assisted with preparations for the event in Swakopmund, a coastal town in Namibia. The vocational competitions were held only for the second time after Kigali, Rwanda, in 2019.

Festo provided the competition equipment for two skills in Manufacturing & Engineering Technology and construction & Building Technology: Mechatronics and Water Technology.

On the Festo booth, visitors had the opportunity to literally ‘try a skill’ and gain first hands-on experiences with Festo Didactic learning kits MecLab and Bionics Kit.

Especially the Bionic Flower, a robot flower inspired by natural phenomena, was in the center of attention. Many school kids as well as Dr. Nangolo Mbumba, Vice President of the Republic of Namibia, and Hon. Dr. Itah Kandjii-Murangi, Minister of Higher Education, Training, and Innovation were captivated.

Why TVET is vital

The participants of the WorldSkills Africa conference discussed the best ways of building up young people’s skills in vocational education. The youth is the best resource a country has. Upskilling them provides national industries with the needed experts. A stable economy is the foundation of sustainable growth, technical innovations, and a working infrastructure.

The powerhouse of Africa

“Young people are the powerhouse of Africa. They have best opportunities on the job market through technical vocational education and training. WorldSkills Africa Swakopmund 2022 created the awareness for this”, explains Elfi Klumpp, Head of Partnership Development Global Education at Festo Didactic.
